Vernon is located in the Northern Okanagan which includes the city of Vernon and the community of Coldstream. We are surrounded by 3 lakes – Okanagan, Kalamalka and Swan and we have a strong area of farming, orchards and small vineyards.
Our community is named after a former MLA, Forbes George Vernon, who founded the famous nearby Coldstream Ranch.
Our town was originally discovered by the Okanagan People – a native tribe of Interior Salish and they gave us the original name of “Nintle Moos Chin” meaning “jumping over place where creek narrows”. This was in reference to the Swan Lake running into a creek that today still runs through the downtown portion around businesses.
We are proud to have a community that hosts the Winter Carnival with the popular Hot Air Balloon Festival, home of the O’Keefe Ranch and known for section of town called the “BX” in honor of the famous stage coach.
Our District is lucky to have the wonderful GGC Camp Tillicum in our backyard, just 10 minutes from downtown, that our average of 110 members in all Guiding Branches, use regularly.
